The Malcolm X Quarterly Scholar

The Quarterly Scholar highlights the academic achievements of El-Shabazz Public School Academy students. The students, based on their academic excellence, are identified by their classroom teachers and receive quarterly recognition in this publication. These students, in our opinion, best exemplify the dedication, discipline, and determination, that the school's namesake, Malcolm X, believed to be the key ingredients to individual and community success.

Choosing Malcolm X Scholars for first quarter was very easy.  Kyra, Shayla, Najma, and BreAnna, are students who always give 100%.  They are the students who complete every assignment and they even ask for additional work.  They are rarely absent, and if they are, they ask for their missed work, which they complete that night and return it the next day.  Kyra, Shayla, Najma, and BreAnna are well liked by classmates, and other teachers.  They come to class prepared and they are very eager to begin each assignment. These girls are the top readers, highest scoring students in math, and they create the best sentences in Language Arts.  In Social Studies and Science, they participate and they contribute to the topics at hand.  Because of Kyra’s dedication to learning, she spends part of the day, learning with the second graders.  Girls, you certainly deserve the title of Malcolm X Scholars!  Congratulations!!

SvehlaMr. Svehla's Fifth Grade

Dear Parents and Guardians of El Shabazz Academy,

It is so hard to believe that we are in the second marking period for our school.  The students have all worked so very hard! I am proud of all of them for their effort and advancement in their studies.

Several students in particular have really raised the bar of excellence in our classroom. These fifth and sixth-graders have the distinction of being Malcolm X Scholars for the first marking period. Ten individuals in our classroom showed exemplary work and strove to succeed in every endeavor undertaken!

Four gentlemen went above and beyond the bar in all subjects during this marking period! These students are Thomas, Kemofi, Cadiefeye and Dhan. Not only did they excel scholastically, but these gentlemen also consistently helped their classmates during group work sessions.

Six young ladies in our classroom also excelled in all academic subjects and behavior. These students are Jaleasea, Malissa, Jamari, Lazarya, Shiya, and Shakira. During this marking period, these young ladies proved not only to be scholars – but also social leaders.

I am very proud to announce that these hard-working students are gaining the recognition they so richly deserve! I also want to point out that this was over material that was from last year. It will take the same dedication to excellence to make it next marking period, as we concentrate on new material. I believe these students and others are capable of achieving the highest success.

Best Wishes,
Mr. Jeff Svehla

Mr. CollierMr. Collier's Math Support

One of the most important characteristics of a developing scholar is persistence. Persistence is when you keep on going despite many obstacles along the way. Many people, when they first encounter defeat, tend to throw their goals, desires, and purposes overboard. They tend to give up at the first sign of failure, and never experience the feeling of overcoming, and ultimately achieving their goals. My Malcolm X Scholars for the first marking period were selected for their persistence. They are as follows:

Kindergarden
Kanayia
Lationia

1st Grade
Erynai
Jerimiah

3rd Grade
Darrius
Nyerere
