The Quarterly Scholar highlights the academic achievements of El-Shabazz Public School Academy students. The students, based on their academic excellence, are identified by their classroom teachers and receive quarterly recognition in this publication. These students, in our opinion, best exemplify the dedication, discipline, and determination, that the school's namesake, Malcolm X, believed to be the key ingredients to individual and community success.

Shabazz Scholars - DornbushMrs. Burton's Kindergarten

Mickala - Has become a top scholar! She has mastered all her letters and letter sounds. She is now reading first grade level readers. She has learned how to take her time on her assignments and is doing a great job with our kindergarten spelling lists! She has worked her way up to top scores in all academic subjects. Congratulations Mickala!

Cedric - Has strived for excellence and has reached it! He has really worked hard at becoming one of the top scholars in class! He is great with his mathematical skills and is reading first grade level books. Keep up the great effort Cedric!

Charles - He has stayed focused and strived hard to become a scholar! Charles has mastered all of his letters and letter sounds. He is doing a great job reading short stories. He does a good job trying to write sentences to go with his pictures. He does a great job in class discussions. He is also a very helpful person and is a friend to all his classmates! Congratulations on making it to the scholars list Charles!

Charles M.- Has worked his way up to a top scholar! He loves to combine letters to see if he can make new words. He is reading short stories and loves to write his own sentences! He is doing well with his addition and subtraction skills. Charles is working hard to stay at the top of his class. Great effort and congratulations Charles.!

Talecia - She has come a very long way to become a Malcolm X Scholar! She has mastered all of her letter and letter sounds. She is now reading short stories and some first grade level books. She takes pride in knowing her sight words anytime she is called on. She is now taking part in class! Talecia is raising her hand to answer questions and tell her ideas about a topic during class discussion time. She worked diligently to know how to write and say her numbers. Talecia learned them so well that she is now adding and subtracting numbers. Congratulations on the great gains that you made this marking period Talecia!

Malaak- Has put forth an extraordinary effort has become a Malcolm X Scholar! Malaak joined our class in January of this year. She came all the way from the country of Yemen! She has learned almost all of her letters and letter sounds. She is now reading short stories and has learned a lot of her sight words. Malaak is even speaking in English to her classmates! She does well will all of her mathematical skills. Her work effort is amazing and it has helped her to become a top scholar! Congratulations Malaak!

Jordyn - Continues to do a great job in Kindergarten! She is reading short stories and starting to write sentences. Jordyn is performing at high levels in all academic subjects. She is a great team player, and is a big helper in the class. Continue the great work Jordyn!

Jaydyn - Continues to make great gains in class! He is reading short stories on a first grade level! He loves to write new words so he can form sentences to go with the pictures he has drawn. He continues to finish all of his class assignments on time and really tries hard to do his best! Great way to be a leader Jaydyn!

JayVon - Continues to do a fantastic job focusing on his kindergarten skills! He has learned how to make his own addition and subtraction problems and can answer them all correct! He scores top grades on all of his assignments. He does a great job helping out his classmates! JayVon continues to be a great example of a scholar.

RaeKwon - Continues to be at the top of his class! He works hard in class and makes a great effort to participate in class discussions. He loves to draw pictures and is now writing sentences to explain them! He is also doing a great job with his addition and subtraction skills. Keep doing your best RaeKwon!

Marcus - Continues to do an excellent job in Kindergarten! He has worked hard at following directions in class and on his assignments. He continues to score top grades on all of his activities! He is reading short stories, and maintains doing an exceptional job remembering the skills taught to him! Continue the great progress Marcus!

Davion - Continues to stay at the top academically. He is reading and writing new on a first grade level! He does an excellent job practicing any skill until he has mastered it. He is still scoring top grades on all activities! Keep up the great job Davion!

Sadaya-Has continued to work hard to stay a top scholar! She is now reading short stories and is doing very well with the new math concepts. She is also working on being the first to know all of our counting patterns by heart! Your great effort paid off! Keep doing your best Sadaya! These thirteen students have done an exceptional job working towards a higher level!

Kalib is a Malcolm X Scholar. Kalib has surpassed all of the kindergarten expectations. He is reading above grade level and knows over 100 sight words. Kalib also excels at addition and subtraction skills. Keep up the great job Kalib!

Congratulations Dai'Shanay, you are a Malcolm X Scholar. Dai'Shanay is reading, and knows all of her sight words. She scored high on her time assessment in math. Great job Dai'Shanay.

Archie is a very bright student. Archie is reading! He is an excellent math student. He does very well with time, money, addition, and subtraction. Archie knows all of the kindergarten sight words. Archie is a Malcolm X Scholar. Keep up the great work Archie!

JaNya continues to be a dedicated student who attends school every day and does her very best work. She is a good citizen in our classroom and as a result has many friends. Justis is a hard working student who has great attendance, a positive attitude, and a good work ethic. Justis is also a good citizen and is helpful in our classroom, always willing to help others. Kyra is a positive citizen in our kindergarten classroom and works hard every day on doing excellent work. Kyra is a responsible student in our classroom community and a leader who leads by example. Anthony has worked hard throughout the year and his hard work has paid off. Anthony has become a Malcolm X Scholar for the third marking period as a result of his dedication to academics, good attendance, and positive behavior. Takajah has dedicated herself to her studies and achieved high academic scores in all areas. Takajah has achieved the status of Malcolm X Scholar for the third marking period as a result of her hard work. Takajah comes to school with a smile on her face, a positive work ethic, and an enthusiasm for learning. Takajah is a Malcolm X Scholar for the second and third marking period. Amira can be very proud of her amazing improvement in all subject areas. Amira continues to apply herself when at school to achieve high performance and grades in all academic areas. Amira is hard worker, a dedicated student, and a well behaved citizen in our classroom. I am happy to award Amira with the Malcolm X Scholar award for the second and third marking period. Najma is a positive and dedicated student who is an excellent worker. Najma speaks English as a second language and still continues to perform at a high academic level as a result of her good behavior, hard work, and positive attitude. Najma is a responsible citizen in our classroom community, a good friend, and a big help to her sister Nadia who also speaks Somalia. I am happy to recognize Najma as a Malcolm X Scholar for the first and second marking period. Congratulations Najma!

Shayla is a very dedicated positive student who has improved her performance to achieve the honor of Malcolm X Scholar for the second and third marking period. Shayla is willing to work hard when at school to learn. Shayla has a desire to be successful in school so I am happy to award Shayla with the Malcolm X Scholar award. Congratulations Shayla!

Charles has committed himself to a rigorous course of study to improve his academic performance and has achieved the status of Malcolm X scholar for the third marking period. Charles comes to school ready to learn with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Charles is a good citizen at school and as a result has many friends. It has been amazing to see the growth and improvement in Charles and I look forward to his continued success the remainder of the year. Congratulation Charles!


Shabazz Scholars - CollierMr. Collier's First Grade

I proudly introduce Mr. Collier's First Grade Class, third quarter 2009 - 2010, Malcolm X scholars. These students come to school every day ready to learn. They consistently grasp new material and turn in assignments. They have also demonstrated leadership by helping others in the classroom and being a good citizen. Shabazz Scholars - UnderhillMrs. Underhill's First Grade

For 3rd quarter, my Malcolm X Scholars are Terrasia, D'Neya, Preston, Elijah, and Randon. These students are A+ students who successfully master all their assignments. They love school, beg for extra homework, and they love working with their classmates. Terrasia, D'Neya, Preston, Elijah, and Randon are truly Malcolm X Scholars.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Shabazz Scholars - BullockMs. Bullock's First/Second Grade

Jaquaila, Jaonna, and Naquaisha have been working very hard this entire year and are doing an excellent job. They all have A's in math. Jaquaila and Jaonna ladies mastered their addition and subtraction facts. Naquaisha has mastered her addition facts. All three are great at regrouping, too. They all work extremely hard each and every day to make sure that their work is correct and neat. They have their hands in the air every time a question is asked. They love to help others and are very patient with their fellow classmates. They are good writers and spellers. These ladies are doing an excellent job on reading activities and are always striving to better their understanding and comprehension. Way to go again ladies! I am very proud of you!

Tayvion and Ashlynn have done a great job during the third marking period. Both are reading above grade level and do a great job on reading activities in class. They are always on task and focused on the work in front of them. When they finish their work, they are always ready and willing to help others with their assignments. They are both attentive listeners and are always involved in class discussions. Both are also becoming good writers. They turn in their homework each and every day. They also make sure to take their time on all assignments so that they are done neatly and accurately. Great job! You both are second grade scholars!


Shabazz Scholars - CallahanMs. Callahan's First/Second Grade

Janan and Kayla have done an outstanding job so far this year, in all subjects. These girls are terrific spellers and are currently reading well above grade level. Janan is an excellent writer as well. She has turned in all of her homework consistently. Janan makes sure to take her time on all assignments ensuring that they are done neatly and accurately. Kayla is an excellent citizen in our classroom. She is always more than willing to help others. Kayla has been to school on time everyday this year. Both Janan and Kayla have been Malcolm X Scholar all three semesters and I am extremely proud of them. Way to go Janan and Kayla!

Sammie and Tatiana are very hard working students. They have strived to be on the honor roll. Sammie and Tatiana studied very hard this semester and their grades reflected their hard work. Both students have turned in all of their homework everyday. They both have A's on every spelling test. Sammie and Tatiana have worked on their writing and always participate in class. Their work is always neat and on time.

Being a Malcolm X Scholar is a very high honor to receive. All of my Malcolm X scholars are highly motivated children that are very focused on their studies. I expect that you will continue to shine and show off your academic talents. Outstanding work third semester Janan, Kayla, Tatiana, and Sammie.

 


Shabazz Scholars - MuriithiMrs. Muriithi's Third Grade

Anissa - For three consecutive semesters, Anissa has maintained such remarkable grades. Anissa got no less than A- for the 3rd marking period! In addition, Anissa represented our class exceedingly well during the science fair. She has a lively personality that adds joy to our classroom. Congratulations honorable student, I am very proud of you!

Haywood - Once again, Haywood has made the honor roll for the 3rd time, consecutively! He has attained decent grades in all the core subject areas. In addition to academics, Haywood is actively involved in after-school programs including African Drumming, Soccer, Football, and many more. Keep up the commendable work Haywood, I am very proud of you!

Deyea'breon - Deyea'breon was determined to make honor roll for this marking period, and she did! She attained As and Bs in the core subject areas. Her demeanor has noticeably improved for the best! Deyea'breon stays focused while in class and always strives to excel. Additionally, she was the top 3rd-grade speller during our school-wide "Mock Spelling Bee". I am very proud of you, keep up the hard work.

Shabazz Scholars - JonesMs. Jones' Fourth Grade

Javon has maintained academic excellence throughout the school year. His love of learning and hard working attitude is an inspiration to his classmates. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to those that struggle.

Anthony has once again maintained all A honor roll. He is confident in himself as an excellent and intelligent student. He is a friend to all and is generous with time and knowledge to those students who may be struggling. His attention to detail and excellent citizenship set an excellent example for his classmates.

Maliah has maintained outstanding citizenship and academics throughout the school year. She is another student who has been a Malcolm X Scholar throughout the school year. Her maturity and outstanding level of attention to her studies are a delight to her teachers and fellow students.

I am so proud of these students for their wonderful effort and academic growth in becoming strong leaders of our classroom and school community. They have each shared with me their goals for college and professional careers. I wish them luck and hope they continue on their path of excellence.


Shabazz Scholars - SvehlaMr. Svehla's Fourth Grade

Dear Parents and Guardians of El Shabazz Academy,

It is so hard to believe that we are in the fourth marking period for our school. The students have all worked so very hard! I am proud of all of them for their effort and advancement in their studies.

Several students in particular have really raised the bar of excellence in our classroom. These fourth-graders have the distinction of being Malcolm X Scholars for the third marking period. Eight individuals in our classroom showed exemplary work and strove to succeed in every endeavor undertaken!

Two gentlemen went above and beyond the bar in all subjects during this marking period! These students are Ajovi Artis, Kemofi Brown, and Dhan Boggan. Not only did they excel scholastically, these gentlemen also consistently helped their classmates during group work sessions.

Five young ladies in our classroom also excelled in all academic subjects and behavior. These students are Brianna Mateen, Jamari McKinney, Lazarya Nathan, Shiya Richardson, and Caliyah Williams. During this marking period, these young ladies proved not only to be scholars - but also social leaders.

I am very proud to announce that these hard-working students are gaining the recognition they so richly deserve!

Suzie loves learning about history and cultures. She is always sharing great facts from the History Channel! She is also a creative writer and excels in mathematics. Congratulations Suzie!

Termaine is an excellent critical thinker! He asks questions that show his passion for learning. He also helps encourage classmates to stay on a successful track! Nice work TJ!

Jasmine is a fantastic student! She is always friendly and helpful. She is kind-hearted and a wonderful role model. She has excelled in mathematics! I'm so proud of you Jasmine!

Michelle has shown great leadership all year. She is a top reader and does an excellent job reading articles from the New York Times! Keep up the great work Shelly!

Malik is a natural born author! He writes creatively and has a gift for telling stories. He also excels in mathematics. Excellent job Malik!

Diamond L. is a top student! Her writing is humorous and creative. She also excels in mathematics. Her laugh is contagious!

I want to congratulate all the third quarter Malcolm X Scholars. I am so proud of each of you. Keep up the fantastic work!

Yasmeen Hobbs is not only a Malcolm X scholar for the third marking period in a row, but he received all A's for this marking period. Yasmeen is an intelligent, polite and meticulous student. She does her work with care and precision. She also continues to be a tremendous helper in the classroom.

Carlton Gant III is a very intelligent and interested student. He is eager to learn new material and answers questions during class. Carlton has also made great strides in his classroom behavior this marking period.

Ashia Ansley has made the Malcolm X Scholars for the third marking period in a row. She is a bright young lady with many ideas and opinions. She is always active in class discussions.

Timbre Benson-Martin is a scholar for the third marking period in a row. She received all A's on her report card. Timbre is a diligent student. She works hard to learn new ideas and to answer all of my questions.

Alma Holt succeeds in all areas, but specifically in writing. Throughout the year she has written very creative and intellectual papers. She is a leader in the classroom; with a strong heart and mind.

Kenneth Johnson is a Malcolm X scholar for the third marking period in a row. He continues to work hard to understand and master new material. He is very curious and loves to ask questions and learn new things.

Taja'h Smith thrives in all academic areas. She shows her dedication to her education through her detailed notes in her notebook. Taja'h is an enthusiastic and hard working student.

Zhervonte Smith is a respectful, bright and determined young man. He completes all his work carefully and in a timely manner. He has set goals for himself and he continues to work hard to fulfill those goals.

Kiara Myles is also a scholar for the third marking period in a row. Kiara does her work with intellect and accuracy. She is an attentive student and eager to answer questions. She enjoys learning new things.


Shabazz Scholars - LuckyMs. Lucky's Sixth Grade

Jonee' is such an awesome student. She has once again done a splendid job in all subjects. Congratulations!

Vashune has worked to be the best and now she is one of the best in class. She has received excellent grades in all subjects. GOOD JOB!

Infinidy is such a diligent student. She has always strived for the best and once again, she is one of the best. AWESOME Work!

Lisa is definitely a hard working student. She has once again stayed at the top of the class with awesome grades. Terrific!
