The Quarterly Scholar highlights the academic achievements of El-Shabazz Public School Academy students. The students, based on their academic excellence, are identified by their classroom teachers and receive quarterly recognition in this publication. These students, in our opinion, best exemplify the dedication, discipline, and determination, that the school's namesake, Malcolm X, believed to be the key ingredients to individual and community success.

Shabazz Scholars - DornbushMrs. Dornbush's Kindergarten

Donovan is a Malcolm X Scholar. Donovan has achieved high scores on his assessments. Donovan is doing a great job learning his sight words and he is very good at addition problems. Congratulations Donovan!

Sharnina is a Malcolm X Scholar. Sharnina works hard to complete all of her assignments. She is doing very well in all subject areas, and knows her sight words. Excellent work Sharnina!

Zyon is a Malcolm X Scholar. He completes all of his work accurately. Zyon also achieves high scores on his assessments. Also, Zyon is doing a great job learning his sight words. Zyon has excellent behavior in class, and is an excellent listener. He consistently makes quality choices in the classroom. Great job Zyon!

KahDaniel is a Malcolm X Scholar! KahDaniel has an excellent knowledge of his sight words. He has earned an A on every assessment in both literacy and math. Also, KahDaniel is doing a great job learning addition. Keep up the great work KahDaniel!

Mrs. Kuchnicki's Kindergarten

Deonna Baldwin is a dedicated student who exhibits excellent behavior within the classroom setting. I can count on Deonna to be ready to learn every day. Deonna is a student who continues to work hard on her school work both in the classroom and at home and it shows in her A + grades.

Kenteria Bell is an excellent student who is always on task, paying attention, and learning her lessons with pride. Kenteria possesses an A+ average in all subjects and is well behaved in the classroom. Kenteria treats others with respect and has high regard for learning. I am very proud of Kenteria for all her hard work.

D'Neyah Hobbs is an excellent student with a positive attitude and a love for learner. She can be seen in class working hard, paying attention, and doing her very best work every day. I am so proud of her A+ scores in all learning areas and know she will continue to work for her future educational success.

Preston Starks is a hard working student who excels in all of his educational subjects. Preston is well behaved, hard working, and has a super positive attitude. Preston is willing to be a helper and a leader. I am very proud of all the hard work Preston commits for his future educational success. Way to go A+ Preston.

Terrasia Edwards is a wonderful student who excels in all subject areas. Terrasia is hard working, dedicated, shows up every day to learn and has a positive attitude every day. I am very proud of Terrasia and the effort she gives to her studies. Her A+ grades are a reward well earned by her hard work and dedication.


Shabazz Scholars - CollierMr. Collier's First Grade

I proudly introduce Mr. Collier's 2nd quarter 2008 - 2009 Malcolm X scholars. These students come to school every day ready to learn. They consistently grasp new material and turn in assignments. They have also demonstrated leadership by helping others in the classroom. My favorite characteristic, that these four students exhibit is persistence. When working on new skills, they do not rest until it is acquired. All these students are skip counting by 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 8's. In our grammar curriculum, these students know the five rules of a complete sentence, and can identify subject nouns and verbs.

Jaonna Miller is the first student to consistently score 100% on our timed addition assessment. She is also doing well on the timed test for subtraction.

Savannah Jackson is extremely neat and organized. She strives to be a perfectionist. She is always in great spirits and eager to learn.

Martavya Greenlee is another of the best spellers in the class. She has also improved in the timed addition test that we have been practicing. She is always participating in class.

JaLaya Woodson is the second student to complete the timed addition assessment.

NaQuashia Owens is the first student to master the dialog for identifying subject nouns and verbs. When Dr. Bellas saw her recite in class, she took her to demonstrate for Dr. Cain. Although she may have suffered stage shock, our class is extremely proud of her.

 


Shabazz Scholars - UnderhillMrs. Underhill's First Grade

What outstanding Malcolm X Scholars there are for 1st grade, this second semester. I have the privilege of teaching Kayla, Amir, Sammie, Kanisha, and Tatiana. These students believe they can succeed. Therefore, they do their best at all times. It is very rare for them to miss any of their spelling words. They write complete sentences, knows how to find the subject noun, verb, and adverb within a sentence, they have successfully learned all the units covered in math, and most of all, they are respectful to others. I am glad to have them in my class. Keep up the good work first graders. You deserve this Malcolm X Scholar recognition!

 

 


Shabazz Scholars - BullockMs. Bullock's Second Grade

Kaile and Tanaysha have been working very hard this marking period and are doing an excellent job. They both have A's in math. Tanaysha has mastered her addition facts and is now working on her subtraction facts. They both work extremely hard each and every day to make sure that their work is correct and neat. They have their hands in the air every time a question is asked. They both love to help others and are very patient with their fellow classmates. Kaile and Tanaysha are good writers and spellers. Both are doing an excellent job on reading activities and are always striving to better their understanding and comprehension. Way to go ladies! You are second grade scholars!

Haywood, Deyeabreon and Caliyah have done a great job during the second marking period. All three are reading above grade level and do a great job on reading activities in class. When they finish their work, they are always ready and willing to help others with their assignments. They do consistently well on all their spelling tests. They are all becoming good writers. Each of them has an A in math. All three have mastered their addition facts and are close to mastering their subtraction facts. They turn in their homework each and every week. They also make sure to take their time on all assignments so that they are done neatly and accurately. Way to go! You are all second grade scholars!


Shabazz Scholars - CallahanMs. Callahan's Second Grade

First Grade: Taviana- is starting to read fluently at a first grade level. She does well on all of her spelling tests. Taviana has an A grade average in math. She is a hard worker and is a good participant in class. Taviana is a good leader. Keep working hard Taviana!

Tajanae- is a wonderful first grade reader. She has worked hard to start fluently reading at the first grade level. Tajanae is always on task. She takes initiative to be a leader. She has a high B average in math. Keep up the great work Tajanae!

Andrea- is a top speller in the first grade. She is working hard and beginning to fluently read at the first grade level. Andrea has a high B average in math.

Miracle- is blossoming in her reading skills. She is working hard and is emerging as a fluent reader. Miracle is a good math student. She has achieved a high B average in math. She always participates in class. Miracle is a great leader. Job well done!

Second Grade: Eric, Anissa, Simone, and Nathaniel, are all excelling in the second grade. Nathaniel is a first grader whose academic performance has pushed him to work on and above grade level .These students are dedicated to their work and often go above and beyond the assigned task. They all take pride in their work completing assignments neatly and accurately. Their efforts are reflected in their grades for all subjects. These students are reading and taking spelling test above grade level. They all have high B's or A's in math and science. I am truly proud of my Second Grade Malcolm X Scholars.

 


Shabazz Scholars - BurtonMrs. Burton's Third Grade

Jamari continues to be an excellent student! She has passed every subject with all A's and has returned her homework on time everyday since the beginning of the school year! Jamari does a great job being a leader in the classroom. She is also great at helping other students in the class. Jamari continues to be an example of a great scholar!

Yasmeen has continued to stand out as a great student. She has earned top grades in all subjects again this marking period. She also continues to be a team player. Yasmeen is a wonderful scholar to have in class!

Nahson has done it again! He has continued to score top grades in all subjects. Not only has he kept his grades up, he has also improved on being a team player in the classroom. He also continues to be a great scholar!

Lazarya continues to be a very hard worker! She continues to do well scoring top grades on her classroom assignments and homework. She loves to make sure she has everything correct, which has continued to make her a top scholar!

Shiya'Lamara continues to do an excellent job on any assignment that is given to her. She does a great job listening in class and remembering all of the things that are being taught to her. These special skills help her continue to be an awesome scholar!

MyCaesha continues to be enthusiastic about her work. She did a great job making sure she turned in excellent work. She still loves to help out with class discussions. MyCaesha continues have top scores in every subject. She is doing a great job being a top scholar!

Jave'on did a wonderful job focusing on his academics this marking period. He improved in every academic subject. He also did a good job turning in his homework on time. Jave'on has made sure to contribute a positive attitude in class. These attributes have helped Jave'on become a top scholar!


Shabazz Scholars - ChegeMs. Chege's Third Grade

Anthony: Anthony has made the honor roll once again! This studious individual has stayed focused both in and outside of the classroom He has maintained remarkable grades in all the subject areas including Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. I am delighted to be his teacher. Keep up the great work Anthony.

Javon: Another excellent student is Javon, who, once again, has made the honor roll. He has attained admirable grades in all subject areas including Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social studies. This focused student works very hard in class and always exceeds expectations. He is an excellent role model to other students. Stay on course Javon.

Mya: Mya has maintained notable grades in class. She takes her time when working on her assignments to ensure that she scores the highest points possible. Mya also helps other students who may need help with their work. Her reading level is exceptional; she never hesitates to ask for more challenging work. I am very proud of her achievements. Great job Mya.

Darius: Darius A keen and intelligent student, Darius has worked very hard to make it to the honor roll this quarter. He is proof that if you stay focused, anything is achievable. Darius retains the information learned in class and is not afraid to share it with others. Congratulations Darius, you did it and I am very proud of you.

Dejunae: Another student worth mentioning is Dejunae. She has put a lot of effort in her assignments and it has paid off. Dejunae maintained A's and B's in her work. This student enjoys reading a lot and as a result has improved her reading level tremendously. Dejunae understands the importance of paying attention in class and completing all the work assigned by her teacher. I am very happy for you Dejunae, the sky is the limit!

Maliah: Last but not least, Maliah is yet another remarkable student, who has made it to the honor roll once more. She has admirable grades in all subject areas. Maliah takes her work very seriously and has not missed even one single assignment! She is a dependable and responsible student. Keep up the great work Maliah, congratulations!

Shabazz Scholars - JonesMs. Jones' Fourth Grade

Timbre is a Malcolm X Scholar for the second time in a row. Timbre is an amazingly perceptive child who uses the tools of knowledge offered to her at school and applies them to deep concepts of real world application. Timbre also embodies the qualities of generosity, kindness, and understanding toward her fellow learners. She is well liked among her peers and a joyous addition to our classroom community. Congratulations go out to her for her hard work and dedication in all areas of academics.

Kenneth earned a place among our elite Malcolm X Scholars for his deep love of learning. Kenneth shows an interest and a curiosity in all subject of school and in the world at large. He is glowing light of enthusiasm and eagerness in all areas of academics. His peers appreciate his engaging and generous personality. Congratulations Kenneth, your hard working attitude has paid off.


Shabazz Scholars - SvehlaMr. Svehla's Fourth Grade

The Malcolm X Scholars from Mr. Svehla's room were Zhervonte Smith and Breanna McKissic. Zhervonte is not only an excellent student in all subjects, but he also exemplifies the attributes that Shabazz Academey expects from its students. Breanna McKissic also excels in all subjects. She strives constantly to not only succeed but also to excel. Both of these students continue to raise the bar of excellence in our classroom. While I feel our class is the "Best of the Best," these two students stand out in this elite group as superlative scholars.

 

 


Shabazz Scholars - DombroskeMrs. Dombroske's Fifth Grade

The end of the second marking period provides an opportunity for becoming a Malcome X Scholar. I am pleased to announce the following marking period two Malcome X Scholars: Jonee McKinney, Lajazinea Olive, Vashune Potts, Nia Rivers, Lisa Taylor-Johnson and O'Sha Tolbert.

These young ladies continually exhibit high academic standards. They turn in quality work and are thoughtful in their writing assignments. They turn in work on time and always take the extra step to ensure that their assignments contain the obvious answer as well as the additional detail that demonstrates their high level of achievement.

Shabazz Scholars - WaddlesMs. Waddles' Fifth Grade

Danielle Hearnes
Danielle has made great progress since the beginning of the year. She has substantially raised her grades and is learning to make better choices. Danielle puts her heart into her work and is always eager to participate in classroom activities. Like Malcolm X himself, Danielle is turning her best efforts toward becoming a better person and a true scholar!

Ja'Nee Lewis
Ja'Nee is a true A+ Achiever! Her sense of humor and energetic approach to learning keep things lively in our classroom. Ja'Nee excels at both reading and math. She enjoys a challenge and does not give up until she has mastered a new concept or skill. Ja'Nee's love of learning shows in the intriguing questions she asks about any new topic we discuss.

Michael Coleman
Michael loves learning and is always eager to help in the classroom. He is especially good at caring for our classroom pets. Michael enjoys reading and works hard to learn new math skills. Michael sets a good example with his calm and patient demeanor. Congratulations, Michael!


Shabazz Scholars - MahanMr. Mahan's Sixth Grade

Malaika is making great progress academically and is showing improvement on a daily basis. She is willing to participate in class discussions and gives engaging feedback. Malaika is organized and detailed in her approach to achieving goals and objectives. She is polite and respectful and is an important part of the overall classroom environment.

Dennis demonstrates a conscientious and eager attitude toward learning by consistently turning in work which is complete, neat and on time. He shows initiative in group work and follows through on tasks and assignments. Dennis readily participates in class activities and makes positive contributions to class discussions.

Malaika and Dennis are continually working on meeting the high academic expectations that we have in room 202.

This is her first year at Shabazz Academy. She is an outstanding fourth grade student in Mr. Svelha's class. Her favorite subjec is math. She enjoys sports and wants to play in the WNBA. Go for it Khadija!

 

 


 

Shabazz Scholars - MajorMs. Miller's Reading Support

Kabbash Richards is in the second grade. I chose Kabbash as a Malcolm X scholar because he has shown very good improvement in his reading skills, he always has a positive attitude, he gets along well with everyone, and he tries his best every day.

Christopher Luckett is in the first grade. I chose Christopher as a Malcolm X scholar because he has learned all of his letter sounds, he has become a reader, he works well with other students, he always tries his best, and he has shown great improvement in his reading skills.

 

 

 


 

Shabazz Scholars - TarpehMrs. Gregory 4-6 Math Support

My recommendations for the Malcolm X scholars are the following students:

LaShirl Smith - 4th grade, Mrs. Jones LaShirl has shown improvement in mathematics throughout the school year. She has a positive attitude and is respectful to her teachers. Her hard work and effort have contributed to her success. I look forward to seeing her grow throughout the rest of the school year.

Shamar Cooper - 5th grade, Mrs. Waddles Shamaar does a great job of going beyond the surface of simply learning rules for solving math problems. He tries to apply what he is learning so that he is not just memorizing formulas. I am pleased with his progress. I know the foundation he is building in mathematics will benefit him in the future.

Jamesha McCarthery - 6th grade, Mr. Mahan Jamesha is demonstrating more confidence in mathematics. Her hard work in learning the basic skills and understanding concepts are evident in her math assignments. These fundamentals will give her a good start when learning higher-level mathematics. Jamesha gives her best effort when it comes to participating in class and completing her math tasks.
