May/June Newsletter

Mrs. Burton's Kindergarten Grade Class

Jambo Parents, guardians and students: We are quickly approaching the end of the year! We have many exciting activities that are up and coming, so please read the following information to see what’s happening in the months of May and June here at El-Shabazz P.S.A!

LITERACY
Students are continuing to do a great job reading short stories and their sight words. We have finished with our 6th reading theme "Down on the Farm" and are quickly working through theme 7 "Spring is Here". In June we will finish with our last theme "A world of Animals". Each theme has students building their phonemic awareness, sight word recognition, and comprehension skills. These themes also continue to focus on the previous skills, beginning sounds of the letters, learning about story structure, sight words, blending sounds, and fantasy and realism.

MATH
We will be working on Money, Time, and Addition and Subtraction skills for the rest of the year! The students will be practicing how to count coins and know their value. We will work on how to tell time to the hour and half hour. Please continue to help your child by asking them basic story problems while they are with you so that they are practicing addition and subtraction skills. (ex: I had 5 stickers. I gave 3 of them to my friend. How many do I have left?...)

CONFERENCE MAKE-UPS
There were several parents that I missed for our last parent teacher conference of the year! If you were unable to meet with me and/or we did not have our scheduled conference over the phone, please call to reschedule as soon as possible. It is really important for you to know where your child is academically before the year comes to an end. Thanks to all of the parents that were able to make it up to the school that day or reach me by phone!

FIELD TRIPS
We have two wonderful trips left to take this year! The first will be to Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek MI on Friday May 14th! So far, there are nine parents signed up to go with us on the trip. I will send a reminder to those parents. Please let me know by Wednesday if you are unable to go!! We will leave for this trip by 8:30 a.m. Our final trip this year will be to Michigan Adventure!! This trip will take place on June 11th, time to be announced (estimation is 8:00a.m.-7:00p.m.). For more information on prices for parents and times for the Michigan Adventure trip, please contact the main office with your questions. I am excited to go on these final trips I hope that you are able to join us for one or both of our field trips.

MALCOLM X WEEK
Each year at El-Shabazz PSA we pay tribute to Malcolm X by celebrating his life through a week long celebration of activities! Various events have been planned for the week of May 17th- 21st. The school will be sending out a flyer in the mail to give you all of the dates and times of each event. We will not have school on Monday May 17, 2010 to honor Malcolm X's Birthday. School will resume with regular hours on Tuesday May 18th.

PASSPORT TO AFRICA
Another one of our wonderful traditions here at El-Shabazz P.S.A. is our annual Passport to Africa. On Thursday May 27, 2010 each class will display pictures, artifacts, and other wonderful information about a specific country in Africa! Our class will represent the country of Mali. Please make time on that day to come see all of the wonderful displays of Africa.

FIELD DAY
Students will get to have a day of fun in the sun while they play wonderful athletic activities! This is will be held on June 4, 2010. Please be on the look out for more information on Field Day in your students' bag.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS
I am sending this portion again, because I still have a few students coming to school out of uniform! Each student is suppose to wear a white uniform shirt with black uniform pants. Students may wear a long sleeve white uniform shirt or a white long sleeve shirt underneath the short sleeve shirt during the winter months. Boys should wear their white shirts tucked in with a belt. Many students have been coming to school out of uniform, and we had two cases of boys wearing earrings to school which is against school policy. PLEASE adhere to our school uniform policy everyday or discipline notices will be sent to the home. I appreciate your effort in this matter.
