February Newsletter
National African American Parent Involvement Day
February is a very special month here at El-Shabazz Academy. February 6 is National African American Parent Involvement Day, and we are happy that so many of you have been able to join us on such short notice. If you cannot come in on Monday, feel free to stop by any day this week to view our ‘door’ decoration, found outside our door, next to the parent board.
Valentine’s Day
We are collecting ‘breakfast’ boxes for the children to hold their valentines. Cereal boxes, oatmeal boxes, cocoa boxes, etc. all make good holders for valentines. We need the boxes by Friday, February 10 in order to decorate them in time for Valentine’s Day. Extra boxes would also be welcome. Thank you!
No Preschool
Friday, Feb. 17 and Monday, Feb. 20 is Mid-Winter Break and President’s Day. There is no school on these two days. Also, Harambee is scheduled for Friday, February 24; there will be no preschool on that day.
Letter of the Week
This week, our letter of the week is Letter Oo. Show & Tell is Wednesday, and the children can bring in something that ties in with the Letter O. We will be decorating jumbo size ‘Letter Os’ for our bulletin board.
Oo…Oo…Oo…
You can help your child with letter recognition by playing simple ‘letter hunt’ games. Searching for household objects, grocery store items, or the ABC Sign game are all fun ways to involve your child in preschool reading. Recently during our book time, the children enjoyed a Disney Alphabet Soup storybook, where Disney characters created their own alphabet soup, both edible and non-edible. This game can be acted out at home, in whole or in part.
Changeable Weather
Michigan weather can change daily; from cold to warm and wet to windy. Please make sure your child is bundled up, and comes to school with hats, boots, gloves/mittens and warm coats. Also, please keep your child home if he/she has symptoms such as a fever, pink eyes, vomiting or persistent cough.
