February Newsletter
Jambo Parents, guardians and students:
Welcome to February! The month of love and African-American History is upon us. We will be spending lots of time this month showing our “Love” for Black history! Please read the events for February. The new year is going well! I am excited that the students are practicing and learning their new skills! Keep up the good practice at home.
LITERACY- We are starting our new Literacy theme called “Let’s Count”. The students will be working on how to blend sounds of letters together to make words. We will also focus on the letter sounds for Pp; Gg; Ff; and words with the short a sound. The students are working on story structure, and how to summarize a story and retell it in their own words.
WRITING- We are working on using descriptive words in our sentences, writing rhyming words, and writing friendly letters.
MATH-We are continuing our number sense by working on numbers 0-30 with skip counting patterns 5’s, 10’s, 2’s, and 3’s. We are also starting our new unit called Getting Started With Numbers. We will compare sets of objects and make simple graphs.
COUNT DAY!!
Please have your child at school on time February 8, 2012! We are having our count day. School begins at 8:20 am., and it is very important that your child is present and counted for. Make sure you get them up on time so they do not miss the bus! Thank you in advance!
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
It is time to celebrate the brilliant works of African-Americans! The school has joined together to decorate each classroom door to honor various African-Americans. Our door honors African-American leaders. We are featuring black Americans that were the first to break through the lines of segregation. Please take the time as well to discuss the contributions of African-Americans to your child. There are many wonderful websites that can help your child learn important facts. A very good site to visit is www.enchantedlearning.com and search Famous African-Americans.
VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION
This year we will have our Valentine’s Day Celebration on Tuesday February 14, 2012 from 1:30pm-2:45pm. A brief note about the party and all of the students’ names will be sent home with your child. If you would like to volunteer, you may write a quick note to let me know that you are going to come in that day, or you can just come in during the hours of the party to help out.
HUNDRETH DAY CELEBRATION
We will be celebrating the hundredth day of school on Thursday February 16, 2012. The students will celebrate by bringing in items that they can count to one hundred. A letter about our event will be sent home with your child. Feel free to come in to assist and celebrate the hundredth day of school.
FOLDERS AND BOOKBAGS
Thank you so much to the students/parents that have been returning and signing the Monday Folders, but I am having a slight problem getting some students to come to school with their folders and book bags. The students need a lot of help staying organized with their folders, so I ask that you please help them pack their book bag every night so that they have everything they need! It becomes a challenge to have young children try to carry home important notes and work home to you when they don’t have anything to put it in. If you have misplaced any of these folders I ask that you send in replacement folders and I will remake them for your child. Also, please continue to check Monday Folders for any incomplete or work that needs to be corrected. This will help students have the extra time they need to master those skills.
