Shabazz Place HolderMs. Jones’ 4th Grade Class

February Newsletter

Math:

  • We will continue our unit on number sense. We will also be working on multiplication with regrouping up to three digits by two. In addition our class will begin working on long division.  To help your son/daughter, go over multiplication flashcards every night. Multiplication flashcards are available at the dollar store or you can make your own out of index cards.  This is an important skill that affects a lot of math we do.

Reading:

  • Students will continue working on their individual novel studies which focus on reading comprehension and vocabulary skills at each child’s individual reading level.  Students will also be working on language arts skills using their basil reading books and the Houghton Mifflin program. I will continue pulling differentiated reading groups while the rest of the class works in a collaborative group and/or individually on a language arts center.  Beginning in February students will be choosing a book to complete a book report diorama project, to be completed for March is Reading Month.  More details on the project will be sent home in the Monday folders.

Writing:

  • We will continue working on narrative writing with a focus on fantasy writing. Our end goal is that in the month of Langston Hughes students will have a portfolio of writing in which they can choose their piece of writing for this competition.

Science/Social Studies:

  • This month in science we will be focusing on the area of Physical Science. This area of science includes properties of matter and changes in matter.  Following this physical science unit is a unit on Earth Science.  Students will learn about the Earth in space and time, characteristics and patterns of objects in the sky, and fossils.
  • Social Studies: We will focus on the topic of Economics.  Students will learn about a market economy, national economy, and international economy.  They will use fundamental principles and concepts of economics to understand economic activity in a market economy, in the United States, and the global economy.
