February Newsletter

Jambo Parents, guardians and students:
It seems like the month of January literally flew by! The New Year is quickly getting old; soon, this month will be gone too. There are a lot of activities planned for the month of February. Please read along with your child to see what will be happening at Shabazz this month.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
As you all know, we celebrate the contributions of African-Americans in February. Please take time to research the contributions of many African-Americans in this country. Our classroom is learning about some African-American classical music composers. Their names are: George Bridgewater, William Grant Still, Thomas Wiggins, and Justin Holland. Maybe you can research more about their contributions to classical music.

PARENT APPRECIATION
I would like to sincerely thank one of my parents, Mrs. Porter, for her diligent support. Mrs. Porter has been volunteering her time in the classroom, coming to field trips with us, and, donating snack regularly. This month, she personally rewarded these four star students; Mohsen, Jealynn, Preston, Shamier, and Genaro. These students were excellent role models for the month of January. Mrs. Porter, thank you for your continuous support and dedication to our students.

CHARACTER EDUCATION
Each month, we will be exploring character traits that are important for us to posses. For the month of February, we will be discussing the topic of honesty. Please talk to your child about the importance of telling the truth at all times.

SPELLING CHAMPIONS
Our spelling champions of for the month of January were Preston and Branden, congratulations!!! These wonderful spellers scored 100% on all their spelling quizzes for the month of January. Keep up the great work! J

VALENTINE’S DAY PARTY
In honor of Valentine’s Day, our classroom will have a small celebration on Tuesday, February 14, from 2-3. I am requesting that parents donate snack to help with this party. I am encouraging parents to avoid sending candy or sweets. Instead, please send in healthy alternatives.
NUTRITION CLASS
Last month, two representatives from the School Garden-Based Nutrition Program visited our classroom. Students enjoyed making healthy recipes using spinach and other vegetables. The representatives will be visiting again on Thursday, February 16.

MONDAY FOLDERS
Every Monday, students should bring home a folder with graded assignments from the previous week. Parents/guardians are to check this folder and then sign it. Also, these folders serve as a great communication tool between the teacher and parent/guardian. Monday folders are to be signed and returned on Tuesday mornings.

HOMEWORK CELEBRATION
Students who completed all their homework for the month of January celebrated on Friday, February 3. Those students received a pass allowing them to miss a day of homework in February. Also, these students will be able to order a $1.00 book from Scholastic-free of charge. CONGRATULATIONS!! Our next party is on Friday, March 2nd-Don’t Miss It!

SNACKS/SUPPLIES DONATIONS
I would like to thank those parents who have been donating snacks to our classroom. Please keep the donations coming-we always need supplies such as liquid soap, sanitizer, Kleenex, pencils, food snacks and many more. We appreciate every donation.
