Mrs. Burton's 3rd Grade Class
Jambo Parents, guardians and students:
For those who may not know, "Jambo" is hello in the Swahili language. Students, welcome to 3rd grade!!! We, (Mrs. Burton & Mrs. Muriithi) are very excited to be your teachers this year. We will be sending you a newsletter at the beginning of every month to brief you on the activities that will be taking place in our classrooms. Please read on!!
MATH & READING TESTING
Students will be taking reading, writing, and math tests to determine their grade level placement in these core subjects. We are urging students to take their time and do their best during the test.
MEAP TESTING & TUTORING
Students in 3rd grade will be taking a very important state test in October known as the MEAP. This test will be based on 2nd grade content. In order to prepare our students for MEAP, tutoring will be offered from Monday, September 14 to Wednesday, September 30.
CONTACT INFORMATION
We have sent your child home with a parent contact sheet. Please fill in as much information as you can. This will help us serve your child better and, we will also be able to contact you in case of emergencies.
HOMEWORK POLICY
Students will get homework everyday except Fridays. Homework must be completed and turned in to the teacher on the due date. Students who do not complete their homework will lose privileges. On the other hand, students who do complete their work on time will be recognized and appreciated accordingly.
MONDAY FOLDERS
Every Monday, students will take home a folder consisting of assignments they completed the previous week. Inside the folder, there is a sheet that parents/guardians will have to sign after checking students' papers. These papers must stay at home. You can also make comments on the sheet or write a note to us. Once you have signed the folder, your student will have to return it to school on Tuesday morning.
HARAMBEE
Harambee is originally a Swahili Word meaning "Pulling Together". On this day, various special activities happen at Shabazz Academy. Our Harambee for this month will be on Thursday, September 24th. Parents are welcome to attend the event in the evening.
Volunteers are welcome!
We have always enjoyed having parents/guardians assist in the classrooms. There are many ways that you can help our classroom. You can help file papers, bring a snack, read stories, chaperone field trips, and many other things. If this is something you would like to do, please fill in the volunteer sheet we sent with your child.
