November Newsletter
Mrs. Burton's 3rd Grade Class
Jambo Parents, guardians and students:
For those who may not know, "Jambo" is hello in the Swahili language, spoken in Eastern and some parts of Central Africa. We hope you are all doing well, despite the budget uncertainties. Please read this newsletter with your child to find out the events happening this month.
THANK YOU!
The 3rd grade teachers would like to thank all the parents who donated snacks for the Halloween party. Students had so much fun during the walk through, dance, and while watching Michael Jackson's Classic Hit-Thriller! Thank you so much parents for your support-we truly appreciate you.
PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Conferences will be held next Thursday, November 2008, from 2-6pm. Parents please plan to attend the conferences with your child so that you can learn more about his/her academic progress. Please sign up for a conference time as soon as you receive the sign up sheet. We ask that you sign up for a first and second time slot as soon as possible. We will send home a reminder letter with your child/ren with a set time for us to meet on Thursday, November 6, 2008.
FIELD TRIP TO MSU
Our trip to the Michigan State University's 4-H Children's Garden was very informational. As a kick-off to our science unit on plants, students learned about different plants and then had a fun scavenger hunt. As a bonus, every student received a free plant. Most students represented the school very well. A few students, however, had trouble following directions. These students will not be attending the next Field Trip.
MONDAY FOLDERS
Good job with the Monday Folders. Please check your child's folder to see the work we have been doing in class. All corrected papers must be left at home, please! Also, don't forget to sign the sheet provided in the folder. If there are areas your child is having trouble with, please review that skill with him/her to help them master what we have been learning in class.
HOMEWORK CHAMPS CELEBRATION
CONGRATULATIONS to those who made it to the 2nd homework celebration! Due to Halloween Activities, our homework celebration for October was held on Monday, November 1, 2008. Students who participated received a homework pass and a small certificate to recognize their efforts. The homework pass allows these students to miss homework for one day only in the month of November. The passes must be used between Monday November 3, 2008 and Tuesday November 25, 2008. They CANNOT BE USED IN DECEMBER!
UNIFORM ISSUES
We have noticed that some students have been coming to school without the proper uniform. Blue jeans or any other pants are not school uniform. Students who do not come in proper uniform will be written up and sent home. Parents/guardians, if your child needs uniform, please contact the school.
SNACK & ITEM SUPPLIES
In our class we are having a little trouble with bringing important school supplies to school. Students are often borrowing pencils, correcting pens, and crayons from their classmates, but they do no return them! This unfortunately causes unnecessary disputes between students. PLEASE make sure that your student has at least two pencils for school each day, crayons, and their homework folders with all their work inside. We would like to thank all the parents who have been donating snacks and other items to the class. Please continue to do so as we always are in need of snacks and supplies such as Kleenex, hand sanitizers, pencils, and erasers.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK ORDERS
Every month, Scholastic Books sends student book orders to our school. This is a great way for teachers and to create a mini library for themselves. Books usually cost between $1 and $5. We will contribute a $1 toward any books that students the order. November orders begin soon.
SUPER SPELLERS
Every Monday students copy their spelling and vocabulary words to take home and practice. Most of the students are excelling in the area of spelling and vocabulary, but it is obvious that some students did not take time to practice their spelling and vocabulary words because they did not pass the tests. In Ms. Chege's class, Kiara was the Super Speller for month of October. In Mrs. Burton's class Nahson and Jose were the Super Spellers! Congratulations! Keep up the good work SUPER SPELLERS!!!
